In which we wish you a happy Christmas :: Where are you today?

Travel at the holidays with three tinies is major business and we have yet to attempt it. So we’ll go to church tonight, sleep in our own beds, open pressies here, and then go to my Mum and Dad’s for Christmas supper. One of the tinies hasn’t been feeling well, so a slow Christmas is the plan.

Quiet Christmas is my favourite kind of Christmas.

We were wondering:

Who are you and where are you from?

Consider it your Christmas present to me: de-lurk! Go on, leave a comment, say hello. We’d like to know you.

And if you are a regular friend around here, I’d love to say hello to you, too. If you blog, share the link.

May you receive and give both comfort and joy.

May you eat good food, laugh too loud, cry a few tears.

May you wear Turkey Pants (which is what Joseph calls elastic waist pants) without shame.

May you light a candle and say a prayer for those who weep and mourn today.

May you celebrate and praise,

may you know, deep in your bones, He has come, Love wins,

God with us.

Have a happy and blessed Christmas!

Team Bessey

  • Jenn

I certainly don’t need to de-lurk around here. :) But wanted to wish you and yours a wonderful christmas. I just got of a long stretch of work so we are taking it slow around here as well. Just some good quality cuddle time. :)

    • Sarah Bessey

Thanks, Jenn – thankful for you here.

  • Christy

Merry Christmas from a “lurker’ in Langley! Although I have commented once or twice before. I love your blog!

    • Sarah Bessey

So glad to see you, Christy. Thank you!

  • Erin Thomas

Merry Christmas Sarah… thanks for all of your encouragement & humour. My name’s Erin, and I’m from NE Alberta. Kind of wishing the temps were a little higher than -27C so some outdoor fun could be had without imminent danger of frostbite, but still loving the snow! No tinies of my own, but 2 nefoos who are trouble-in-a-box (a box into which a heartily approve of and dive into as often as I can). I get to kiss their wee heads Boxing Day.

This Christmas is a miracle Christmas. I know… aren’t they all? For some, maybe. I don’t know why this year is a miracle Christmas per se… maybe because I need one so badly. I heard it said that that giving up makes Christmas ripe for a miracle. So we wait. Maybe it will be tucked away somewhere behind the tree I didn’t put up, waiting to pop out and scare the pants off of me (hoping to be alone should such a situation occur). In the meantime… I’m wearing a security belt at all times. Here’s to miracles in hidden places.

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to meet you, Erin – hope it was a beautiful Christmas for you.

  • Sarah Askins

Hi Sarah Bessey, I have been reading your blog a few months now because my friend Kelley Nikondeha recommended it. I also blog at but I’m only about a year in. I am British and live in the middle of London but for the first time in my 32 years I will not be in the UK for Christmas. My little brother is living in Arkansas, and his wife just had a baby a month ago and so we have come over the ocean for an American Christmas. Thanks so much for your blogs, I so love reading them. Happy Christmas!

    • Sarah Bessey

Kelley is one of my favourites, Jenny! I think we talked each other’s ears off at her last visit north with us. I want to form a recruiting committee to make her move here with us. :-) Glad to meet you, too!

  • Clint W

Clint from Iowa USA here. Despite the preponderance of women commenting so far, I’m sure I’m far from the only guy out here who appreciates your writing, as I have for the past half year or so. Our best to you, Brian, and the rest of of your family, Sarah. May your quiet Christmas be a blessed one.

    • Sarah Bessey

      Thank you, Emily!

  • Maria

Merry Christmas Besseys! I am about a half hour east down the highway from you, in Chilliwack. I stumbled across your blog months ago and have been drinking it in since then. It has been a real blessing in my life, especially as most Sunday mornings you will find me in the church nursery, rather than drinking in messages by our pastor. Thank you. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. Staying at home with the littles and keeping it low key is the best.

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to meet you, Maria! And thank you.

  • Nicole Hamm

Merry Christmas to you and yours from snowy and cold Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – I’m one of your most faithful lurkers! When I read your work, I think of this Oswald Chambers quote: “The author who benefits you most is not the one who tells you something you did not know before, but the one who gives expression to the truth that has been dumbly struggling in you for utterance.” You have touched my heart in so many ways this year – thank you!

    • Sarah Bessey

Oh, my, Nicole – thank you so much!

Happy Christmas to all of you x I am married to my gorgeous Andy, and mum (mom!) to three tinies (5, 2 & 1) in the UK. I have found such encouragement here this year. I love your pots and pans that bang and clatter to say there is space for me here, to know there are people out there, when I have felt so alone and misunderstood this year, has been something of a life line, really. You have always pointed me back to the One who made me and loves me. Thank you! I tweet @popsydye. Rachel x

    • Sarah Bessey

Thank you so much, Rachel – glad meet you!

Merry Christmas, Besseys. We narrowly missed the snowstorm in the Midwest, and drove 12 hours south to Georgia to spend Christ as with my in-laws and a lot of tiny cousins. Apart from tiny drama, things are pretty quiet and slow here, too, the way I like it. Blessings on your holiday!

Merry Christmas from Sydney, Australia! About to head off to our Christmas morning service. It’s cool, rainy and overcast here this morning – not a traditional Sydney Christmas morning. We had that yesterday – hot, humid, sunny skies and a swim. For a lovely Christmas family treat, if you haven’t seen it all ready check out this video from some very talented New Zealanders. “An Unexpected Christmas”. Sarah, thanks for the gift that your writing is all year round. Katherine (

Hi, Sarah! I have been lurking regularly around your blog since this past summer. As a fellow introvert, fellow friend of Jesus, and as someone without-my-own-tinies-but-an-adopted-aunty-of-three-that-I-love-as-if-they-WERE-mine, I resonate with so much of what you say. And I like quiet Christmases, too. I live up in Edmonton, Alberta. Our forecast for Christmas day is sunny, and -25C (-13F) with the windchill. About par for the course this time of year :) My mom and I still plan to take our annual Christmas Day walk around her tiny rural community. Snow-capped everything where we are! Merry Christmas; looking forward to sharing in your stories for 2013!

    • Sarah Bessey

Whew – that sounds like the Christmases of my childhood! Glad to meet you, Gina!

    Hi Sarah!

Well alright, then. I’m from upstate NY, now living outside Chicago, and I’ve been lurking here for an embarrassingly long time. I’m 22, facing questions about faith and femininity and adulthood and writing–this stage of life is a tunnel of uncertainty and transition, and your blog (among other things) helps me envision a light at the end. Thank you. Merry Christmas to the Besseys!

    • Sarah Bessey

Thankful to be alongside you, then, Kymberly.

  • Nonbirira

Merry Christmas from a rural Albertan with permanent residency in Japan. (Grew up on a farm but have lived in Osaka for the past 27 years. Thank you for taking time in your busy life to share your thoughts and family life with us. Your writing has touched me in many ways… Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and many blessings in the coming year. (^.^)/

I’ve been reading your blog for about a year…to be honest it’s often a devotional for me. I often feel like you express what’s in my heart but in much better sounding words. Merry Christmas from our home to yours.

    • Sarah Bessey

So glad to see you, Leanne – you’re a gift.

  • Allison

Hi Sarah! I’ve been a reader for about a year, ever since I discovered your blog last winter right before the Practices of Parenting Carnival. As the new mama of a then 3-month-old, it was perfect timing to find you…and I’ve barely missed a post ever since. Merry Christmas from central Texas!

    • Sarah Bessey

Well, hello there, Allison! and thank you!

  • Handsfull

I’ve commented several times, and have been reading along for over a year. I’m Donna, and I live in New Zealand with my darling and our 4 littles. It’s Christmas Day here right now, and we’ve been eating too much all day. Everyone’s outside in the sun, playing with all the kids’ new toys – it’s about 28deg, and the middle of summer!

    • Sarah Bessey

      Glad to see you!

  • Devon

Hi Sarah, I am from London, Ontario but originally from Abbotsford, BC. I grew up in the Abby Vineyard and I am pretty sure you know my family. My parents are Ron and Bev… Reading your blog reminds me of home and brings me tremendous comfort. I hope to one day meet you in person when I come home for a visit or move back (fingers crossed). Blessings to you and your family and Merry Christmas!

    • Sarah Bessey

How fun! Small world! I hugged your mama just a few days ago. Can’t wait to meet you in person (and here’s hoping for a move back! I know everyone would LOVE it so much.)

  • Sarah

Hello! I am another Sarah, living with my husband and littles near Los Angeles, CA. I also follow you on FB and comment a little more often there :) I so enjoy your blog, it has encouraged me and challenged me in many areas of my life. Merry Christmas to you and your family, and I hope your ill tiny feels better soon. And you may rest assured that I always wear my turkey pants without shame!

    • Sarah Bessey

Thanks, Sarah – we’re all on the mend at long last. And thank you!

  • Becca

I’m Becca from The Stanley Clan. Christmas (or any day) is rarely quiet in our house in Atlanta (we are inner-city missionaries there . . . whatever that means exactly), but I wanted to pop in and tell you how much I love your blog and your writing and your heart. I’m a Canadian transplanted in Atlanta, so I feel a kinship over that too :-) Anyways, thanks for this post and for your blog! :-) love it!

  • Nancy Peacock

Hi Sarah, Your blog has been my best ‘blog find’ of the year and I have been challenged, encouraged, inspired and touched by it. I live in Edmonton, Alberta with my husband Harold (who is such a gem) and my special needs daughter Hayley (who turned 25 this past summer) and my 20 year old son Spencer (who is at N.A.I.T. and loving it). Thanks for writing so authentically, for going below the surface, and for a writing style that challenges without finger wagging. I really look forward to reading what you and your heart have to say.

    • Sarah Bessey

      Glad to meet you, Nancy!

  • @OdysseyMamaC

Hi Sarah! I’m Camille or @OdysseyMamaC. I blog at I’m currently in Tupelo, MS with my family for Christmas. We’re celebrating the completion of a home study update in preparation for adopting another child sometime next year. Also, I put together a baby doll stroller and high chair tonight without my husband’s help, so I basically rock. I rewarded myself with three different desserts, including fudge pie so delicious it’s probably a sin. :-) I’ve been a huge fan of your blog for about a year now. Thanks SO MUCH for all your inspiring and encouraging words. Praying you have a joyful holiday.

    • Sarah Bessey

You totally rock – that is quite an accomplishment. I once mastered an Ikea bookshelf and called a moratorium on my efforts. So glad to meet you!

  • Rebekah

Blessed Nativity, Team Bessey, from the desert of Southern California! And from a university girl who is very glad to be home nestled in with family, catching up on the glorious flurry that is the interweb. I’ve been following your blog since sophomore year of college (now a senior!), and I cannot tell you what hope you have given me by your honesty, humility, and love. Your words beautify the roughest paths. May God bless you and yours, and ever draw you closer to Himself. With hot chocolatey prayers and wishes for cheer,

    • Sarah Bessey

So glad to meet you, Rebekah! Thank you!

  • Sherry T

Merry Christmas, Sarah. I am reading in Brandon, MB, and this is the first year since my husband and I got married that we are back in our home province for Christmas. He is a military chaplain and between the church and the military we have spent the last 16 years in Ontario and Quebec. While my parents have always come to us for the holidays, this is the first time that extended family can join us. I am also excited to celebrate “Ukrainian Christmas” (Orthodox Christmas) with my family and show my kids the traditions I grew up with. While I had seen your blog before, I’ve been following regularly since your trip to Haiti. Congratulations on funding the school! Blessings this Christmas and in the new year!

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to know you, Sherry. When I was a kid, we were snowed in at a dodgy motel in Brandon while driving between Regina and Winnipeg! Ha! Good times. And thanks for your part in all of the school. So blessed to be doing life with all of you.

  • Susan

Hello, I am a reader, new this year – from Zurich Switzerland (a transplanted American, my husband works here) – not sure how I found you exactly. I’m enjoying your blog very much. Merry Christmas!

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to meet you, Susan! And thank you.

  • Alison

Merry Christmas!! I am Alison, born and raised in Canada, living in Kuwait, celebrating Christmas in Belgium with my husband’s parents (and then New Years in Dubai/Oman with mine!). I wish your family many blessings on this special day and into 2013. :)

    • Sarah Bessey

Wow! What a journey, Alison! Glad to see you here.

  • Joanna Kitchen

Hey there Team Breezy, I am lurker from the UK. Next year I will try to follow your advice not to travel with tinies as we have had a mad few days travelling in the rain. I’m enjoying seeing family but can’t wait for my own bed. I’ve recently started blogging at I recently read your posts on babywise and I couldn’t agree more. It took my a couple of months to throw it in the bin and I’ve been a much happier Mum since! Merry Christmas!

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to hear it, Joanna! And glad to meet you.

  • Gregory Jeffers

Hey Sarah! Merry Christmas! I am from the Houston area, but currently live in Abilene, TX. My fiancee and I are celebrating Christmas in Abilene this year with her parents since she has to work today (she’s a nurse!), though we will spend New Year’s with my parents and siblings. I blog at

    • Sarah Bessey

Hi Gregory – glad to meet you!

    • Sarah Bessey

      Hello! Glad to see you!

  • Anna Gravier

I think I’ve commented once or twice, but I mostly just lurk, and share your posts with my mom which we then read and cry over because you speak our hearts on a regular basis. Thanks for using your gifts and sharing them with us. Merry Christmas from this college student who is still trying to figure out what faith means.

    • Sarah Bessey

Ha! That is so sweet, Anna, thank you. Say hello to your mom for me, too, then, okay?

  • Krista

Merry Christmas Sarah! I’ve been following along quietly for probably close to a year now. Your writing is so captivating! I live in Kitchener, Ontario, but am longing to get out of the city (and perhaps out of southern ON in general.) Enjoy the day!

    • Sarah Bessey

Thank you so much, Krista! And hello!

  • Lindsey Pell

Hello from Grand Forks, North Dakota! We are moving back to Seattle in about a month, after being gone for 4 years. I love the snow here but glad to get back to the homey PNW. Love your posts!

Still trying to get my head around how much or little to share online! We got our Christmas day first, it’s now 8am boxing day! We had the hottest, sunniest day I can rber – it was ice creams and paddling pools all round! Pretty different to Canada :) I love your writing, can’t wait for your books, and love your book recommendations! Peace to you and your family this Christmas xxx

    • Sarah Bessey

Very different indeed. Would love to have a Christmas like that someday. Blessings, Sarah!

  • Anna Armstrong

A very happy Christmas to Team Bessey from Anacortes, Washington. :) My husband and I celebrated Christmas yesterday by going to see the Hobbit and then having his mom over for dinner. I’m working this morning and, honestly, I often read your blog while at work. I’m always so encouraged, Sarah. Thank you for sharing your life and wisdom and thoughts with all of us stranger-friends. I’ve been blogging a bit at

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to meet you, Anna! thank you.

  • Sara Harless

I started reading and smiling and crying through your blog recently. My tinies are a two year old Scarlet Tornado and a precious boy due in February. We live in Indiana. I am encouraged and feel understood by your faith and writing. Keep it up, sister!

    • Sarah Bessey

Scarlet Tornado – love it! Glad to meet you, Sara!

  • Heather Caliri

I’m Heather and I live in San Diego. This Christmas, we’re in Ojai, a artsy valley town near Santa Barbara, visiting my in-laws and watching the cousins all get muddy and eat pretzels. Soon we’ll return home, but only for a few weeks, when we’ll board a plane and fly to Buenos Aires for six months. So Christmas this year is feeling like a signpost on the way to a crazy destination.

    • Sarah Bessey

      Hello, Heather- thanks!

My name is Hayley, I live in the uk and started reading your tweets and blogs when I first went on mat leave (I’m @hayleyannejames). I have one Tiny – Alexander. I love your blog, how you communicate your faith and your family life. You definitely inspire and challenge me. I have a blog but I’ve been a bit remiss in posting over the last year, something I’m going to work on in 2013.

Hope you guys have had a fabulously blessed Christmas

    • Sarah Bessey

Hi, Hayley – love that name you chose for your wee boy. We had alexander on our short list of boy names, too.

  • Erik Pasco

Merry Christmas from the Pasco family. We’re from Birmingham, Alabama and have been following your blog for about a year now. Between you and RHE you are the first regular women bloggers I have followed and I love reading about how God is at work on your families and lives.

After a slow morning at home with the wife and the baby boy to be, we are spending time eating some great food with her family.

    • Sarah Bessey

Well that is high praise! Glad we could introduce you to women bloggers, Erik, and thanks for having a heart to come alongside of us. Many men don’t bother, and I appreciate it! Thanks for taking the time to comment – means a lot.

  • lindseyfoj

It’s Lindsey, born in Haiti, married to my South African and now living in the rural eastern coast of Maryland…for the moment at least. Current prayerful moving contemplation is Alaska — I know…very random. No answers REALLY as to why yet but well there you go….

Today was quiet for us too…also because of sickness….and I am finding that I really loved it a lot!

    Merry Christmas!

    • Sarah Bessey

You are such a blessing, Lindsey. Internet is better with you on it.

      • lindseyfoj

You have no idea what an encouragement that is in this new year! Thank you!

  • KimberlyCoyle

Merry Christmas, Team Bessey:) I’m a regular reader and slacker commenter, although your blog is my favorite find of the year. I live in Switzerland with my three not so tinies, and will be moving back to NJ with lots of bags and bittersweet memories in the summer. We’re celebrating with family in the US this Christmas. I write over at I think you’ve popped in once or twice;)

    • Sarah Bessey

No, no, no slacker! Never. Glad to meet you and know now though Kimberly!

  • katrina

Hello Sarah! Its Katrina, living in Anchorage, Alaska but spending a warm and sunshiney Christmas in Laredo, Texas. I love, love, love your blog :) Merry Christmas!

    • Sarah Bessey

Not many people further north than me, so glad to meet you, Katrina!

  • Lauren

Hi, it’s Lauren from California. I’m from the gorgeous Sierra foothills of Northern California, but am now an Angeleno thanks to a move for college. I’ve stayed because of the diversity and color of this city, in order to keep speaking Spanish regularly, and to start seminary in 2013. I love the blog and regret my anonymity – your words have been such an encouragement to me! I resolve to join the conversation more in the new year. Blessings to you and your family!

    • Sarah Bessey

Don’t regret it, Lauren. Just so glad to know you’re out there, now. Blessings!

  • Jeff Bickley

Hey, Sarah! Merry Christmas to you. I’m Jeff Bickley, and I’m in DFW, Texas. I blog at I would love to have you stop by. Grace and peace!

    • Sarah Bessey

Hi, Jeff! Glad to see you!

  • Jillie

Hi Sarah! A very Merry Christmas to you and yours!
We are the empty-nesters now, so our kids have to come to us. Christmas Eve supper and gifting afterward. Dessert follows, hot cider, eggnog, sweets. Lots of loud laughter, and then they go home. Christmas Day, they pop in when they can and we share leftovers and talk and laugh again. It’s wonderful!
This year I am missing family who’ve ‘gone on’ before us. But it’s good remembering them with such love and fondness. And thinking of those I know who are grieving today.

    • Sarah Bessey

Merry Christmas, Jillie! so glad to see you here.

  • Harriet

Hi Sarah and the Besseys – I’m Harriet and I’m in Ireland – there’s a whole bunch of fandom over here don’tcha know! I’m writing at and you’d like it – even if I do say so myself :) – peace to you and yours under the coloured lights of your tree!

    • Sarah Bessey

I see that! Love my Irish sisters. Maybe it’s because I’m quarter-Irish? who knows! Glad to see you.

  • mariann

Hey Sarah, this is Mariann from Illinois, however am in Destin, Florida celebrating this special day. I so enjoy your blog, it is very refreshing ! May your New Year be filled with God’s goodness abundantly.

    • Sarah Bessey

So glad to see you, Mariann.

  • JulieVC

Hi, I’m Julie from Florida. I’ve only been lurking for a little over a month, when a friend in Houston, Texas shared your post, “In which I tell you the truth about telling the truth”. And I read it and I cried. Because I am the Christian mother of a daughter who is a lesbian and I have learned so much more about how to love people who are different than me from her and her friends than I ever learned in church, though I’ve been in church most of my 47 years. I immediately started reading as many of your older posts as possible as quickly as possible and subscribed. As it happens, we also have similar views on women and the church, feminism, etc.
I felt so affirmed and UNDERSTOOD by that post of yours, that I sent it out to our new group in the church we’ve recently started attending (having left our former church for reasons I think you would find very relatable, btw). There are about 12 people in the group, and one brave soul did actually tell me that he read it and liked it.
I love to read your blog and also love the link ups which take me to other wonderful writing. Thank you for what you do. I eagerly await the publication of your book and even hope to suggest it to my feminist lesbian daughter for her weekly feminist book discussion. God bless you.

    • Sarah Bessey

I remember your comment, Julie – it meant so much to me. Thank you for this.

  • Candace Ladd

Hello Sarah/Team Bessey! My name is Candace, and I’m from Kansas City, although currently also splitting my time going to college in Springfield, Mo. I’m in my third year there, studying to be a music therapist. My big life-passion is breaking the cycle of urban poverty through community development, particularly for families, and my little passions (?) are playing the harp, reading (mostly memoirs and blogs), cooking, eating Chipotle with friends, and the like :)

I’ve been reading your blog since Rachel Held Evans linked over to your post “In Which [Love Looks Like] A Real Marriage” and have so enjoyed reading your thoughts. Your blog is definitely one I check regularly!

Merry Christmas to all of you!!

    • Sarah Bessey

That is a gorgeous life passion, Candace! Eshet chayil! And nice to “meet” you.

  • Michelle Wirth

I’m in Pennsylvania with family freshly recovered from flu season, including a niece who just learned how to use the potty – so we’re celebrating big over here.

    • Sarah Bessey

ha! That is a big celebration indeed! Glad to see you, Michelle.

  • Jen Claus

Hello! I am Jen from St John’s, Newfoundland. I emailed you ages ago, something about being pregnant… I cant remember. Now I have an almost 1 year old little lady who is such a joy. Merry Christmas and thank you for blessing me and so many with the gift of your words.

    • Sarah Bessey

So glad she arrived safe and sound. Glad to see you here, Jen!

  • Melody

Melody from Tennessee here! Just found your blog recently, but I’m already loving it (and looking forward to your book)! Take care~

    • Sarah Bessey

Thanks, Melody! Glad to meet you.

  • Debby Hudson

Hello team! Merry Christmas from sunny Ft. Lauderdale, FL. We’ve exchanged an email about women in ministry. I blog about some of that and serving in a recovery community of all men and about how they continue to shape me spiritually. It can be found at

Your blog has become one of my daily reads. I am encouraged, affirmed, challenged and assured by your writing. Thank you and may you continue to open yourself to Gods leading.

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to see you here, Debby!

  • Mindy

Hi friends, I’m Mindy and I’m reading from Phnom Penh, Cambodia. I found your blog when my sister-in-law Rachel took pictures of your family last year. I’m from Coquitlam, BC, but my husband and I have been missionaries in Asia for 6 years. I read your post “In which this is the stuff of God” (I think that’s what it was called…I can’t find it now) just after I found out I was pregnant last year, my spirit was stirred, and I’ve been following ever since!

    • Sarah Bessey

What a small world! We love Rachel – our tinies still ask about her. Glad to know you’re reading, Mindy!

  • Erin Adams

Merry Christmas to you, Besseys! I love you!
We had ourselves a merry little Christmas at home. Central Coast Calfornia, a little ag town in south Santa Cruz county – Watsonville. First thing to my parent’s house. A 20 foot tree, 29 stockings hanging from the banister & my dad’s annual Christmas Chorizo for breakfast. Then my in-laws at our house for more fun. We all made our own pizzas for dinner. I am drinking a gin & tonic + douglas fir eau-de-vie before I go tuck into bed.(

My blog, which has been rather neglected lately –

    • Sarah Bessey

Wow – 29 stockings! Amazing! Glad to see you here, EA. xo

  • Alex

I’m de-lurking! I’m from North Central Texas, howdy! (eh, I don’t really talk like that because while I was raised here, my family is Italian, not the God-father kind.) I blog at and have been lurking and reading awhile! Merry Christmas!

    • Sarah Bessey

“Not the Godfather kind” – hilarious! Glad to meet you, Alex!

  • Joanna Dobson

Hello a little late from Sheffield, England. I trust Team Bessey had a great day yesterday. I enjoy your blog very much. Mine is here:

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to see you here, Joanna.

  • Melani N

Merry Christmas! I am Melani from Austin Texas. We, too, had a quite Christmas at home, which is a fabulous break from flying our family of five across the the country to Virginia (although, I am already excited about a big Virginia Christmas next year). I blog occasionally at

    • Sarah Bessey

      Nice to meet you, Melani!

  • Heather Bowie

I love this little tour around the world. Happy Boxing Day from Maine. We celebrated with my Canadian mom, Irish husband and one brother who just returned from teaching in China and another brother on school vacation from Scotland so we had our own trip around the world in our own home. Peace to your family.

    • Sarah Bessey

It is fun, isn’t it?! I’m so surprised. and glad to meet you, Heather!

  • Sonya

Hi Sarah, I have been a reader for about 6 months now. I have told everyone I know that they must read your blog! I’m a stay-at-home mom of a 2 year-old in NC. We celebrated Christmas at home. It was an amazing day with our sweet girl. We had cupcakes for breakfast and sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to Jesus. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Thanks for sharing your words.

    • Sarah Bessey

Thank you so much, Sonya! Glad to meet you.

  • Kristin Kraabel

Hi Sarah! I’m from Red Wing MInnesota and the husband is in Afganistan and Fort Stewart GA. I have two beautiful girls and we made Chicken Dumpling soup, played games, and made crafts (as we don’t do presents). I blog at

    • Sarah Bessey

I visited Fort Stewart ages and ages ago, Kristin. Glad to meet you! praying for you as you are apart right now, too.

  • April

Hello from the middle of Missouri! My name is April. I’m a stay at home momma with 4 kids, Grace, Levi, Samuel, and Joy. And I get to share the chaos of life with my husband Joseph. We had a quiet Christmas at home with cinnamon rolls and a few gifts, lots of celebratory food and “fancy glasses” (what the kids call wine glasses). All 4 of our kids were sick with fevers and coughs this year so we didn’t have any guests but that’s ok, we kind of like spending time with each other 😉 thanks for sharing your family and journey with us!

    • Sarah Bessey

So glad to meet you, April. Hope you’re feeling better now.

  • Stevey

Hello Sarah and Team Bessey! I live in Watford, England and I’ve been reading your blog for a couple years now. I’m an infrequent blogger in my own little corner of the internet – I love reading the way you process life and church and faith and family, and I’ve been challenged and encouraged by your writing more times than I can count. I definitely count you as a spiritual mamma/mentor, and I love that the internet lets that happen! (Hoping that doesn’t sound creepy or stalkerish… That’s not how it’s intended!!)
Praying that you’ve been crazy-blessed this Christmas season!

    • Sarah Bessey

Not creepy at all – I feel the same way about many of my favourite writers! Glad to meet you, stevey.

  • chris

    hi Sarah,

i can’t imagine how you’re going to find the time to read all these comments, but it was a kind invitation, so i thought i should take it up. i’m a long-time lurker in (the suburbs of) london (england, not ontario), who ran across your blog via a link with “a holy experience” (i think). you combine kindness, forthrightness, and clarity in a way i really enjoy, and i especially love the posts that are theologically intricate…happy Boxing Day ( Christmas being over)!

    • Sarah Bessey

Well, it took me a while but I’m here at last! I was reading all of them but didn’t get a chance to comment (or start to comment!) until today. So glad to meet you, Chris.

  • karen huber

Happy Christmas, Bessey family! So you know I’m Karen from the midwest, but we are now literally in the in-between, having just left Kansas City, spending two weeks in Wisconsin before moving back to Ireland, which reminds me – Happy St Stephen’s Day (as they celebrate in the Republic). Oh, and I’ve been domained! Thankful for finding you this year…

    • Sarah Bessey

Oh, Ireland – so glad! Good to see you here, too, karen.

  • Laura

Hi Sarah! I started reading your blog shortly after Evelynn was born…and comment every once in a blue moon (so this might be the last comment for a few months haha ;). I’m from Winnipeg, MB, and a year away from an Education degree. I love your blog and am very excited for your book! I hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas.

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to see you here, Laura!

  • Abby

Since you asked….I’m Abby from Michigan. I’m a high school teacher and we live on a farm where my husband is a full-time beef and grain farmer. We have two littles with a third on the way. We must be about the same age and I LOVE your writing and insight. Thanks for taking time to write!

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to meet you, Abby! And congrats on your third!

  • Marie

Marie here, from South Africa. I found you through a link elsewhere to female Christian bloggers. The post that drew me in was ‘In Which my Daughter Wants to Lose Weight’. I remember forcing my husband to read a couple of your posts in a row, that day. Christmas was spent cooking for many in-laws, as my side of the family were all away. I love feeding people, though (something from my Jewish roots maybe?), so it was great.

    • Sarah Bessey

      Glad to meet you, Marie!

  • Sarah Westphal

Hope you had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends! We took it slow too. I am Sarah from the East Coast— New Brunswick, Canada and have been reading your blog for…6 months now? Or if you need a place to crash out in the Maritimes, we have the place and the space! Cheers, Sarah

    • Sarah Bessey

Love Renee! Her blog is one of my favourite stops. Always so inspired by her family. And glad ot know I have a spot out east for when I finally pay my homage visit. :-) Nice to meet you here, Sarah.

  • Jim Fisher

I could throw a snowball over to Anna R … just north of the river from her in Bloomington, MN. I don’t blog, really, but like to paint word pictures when the Spirit moves me over here at

    • Sarah Bessey

      Glad to meet you, Jim!

  • Suzanne

Merry Christmas from Suzanne in Ohio where we are battling the stomach flu, praying for mercy, and enjoying the snowstorm! I blog at, and I am immeasurably thankful for your generosity in sharing your words and your life with us here in this space.

Sounds like a lovely Christmas. I am Becky in Omaha, Nebraska, and found your site a few months back. Excited for your book and thankful for your voice. =)

    • Sarah Bessey

Omaha represents! My husband will be so happy. Glad to meet you, Becky!

  • Sarah Hurliman

Hi Sarah! I have just recently found your blog (the first I read was the “in which we get this part of the Incarnation” post) and I love it. Thanks so much for writing. I am from Illinois but am in Pennsylvania now at Geneva College doing a Master’s in Higher Ed, and trying to make time and habits of reading and writing for fun as well as class. No blog yet but soon. :)

    • Sarah Bessey

So glad to meet you, Sarah.

  • Heather

I’m a brand new reader having been sent over here by a friend who thought I’d find some glimmers of my story in yours. And I did and it brought hope today. I’m in Texas and blog occasionally at and

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to “meet” you, Heather – and welcome!

  • Janet

Hope you had a wonder filled peaceful Christmas! I had a busy loud Christmas at my parents farm in Saskatchewan with the growing clan – my parents love to proudly announce they have 13 grand kids. Currently in Regina, Sk with my trio sleeping soundly in the backseat, looking forward to arriving at our quiet 40 acres and crawling into bed shortly! I have become a regular reader as I am always encouraged by stopping by here. Thank you.

    • Sarah Bessey

I grew up in Regina, Janet! Glad to meet you.

  • Shan

Hello! I am Shannon, living in the currently snowy land of Northern Kentucky, just south of the Ohio border. I have found your website only recently and I enjoy your writing immensely. You speak to a part of me that other Christian bloggers miss sometimes.

    • Sarah Bessey

Thanks, Shan – glad to hear that!

  • KristinV

Hi Sarah. Merry Christmas! I’m Kristin and I’m a fellow Canadian, living just across the bridge in Vancouver. Your writing touched my heart over the last year. I started following your blog when I had my daughter earlier this year as I would read blogs during the wee hours of the night while nursing. Thank you!

    • Sarah Bessey

That makes me so happy, Kristin! Love those late night nursing readings.

  • Anita Mathias

Hi Sarah, your blog is one of my favourites. I read every post. I love your rushing, breathless, maximilist style and your insights. You write very well. Blessings!

    • Sarah Bessey

Thank you so much, Anita. And thanks for including me on your FB ranking list, too. Blessed me!

  • fiona lynne

I’m a mostly-lurker, sometime-commenter, sometime-tweeter. :) We spent Christmas on the Danish island of Bornholm with my husband’s family. It was simple and lovely and delicious. Thank you for your gorgeous writing, your prophetic words, your fearlessness which helps me be brave too. A very happy Christmas to you all.

    • Sarah Bessey

Love to see you here, Fionna! Knew your name right away.

  • Becca Schwartz

Hi Sarah! I am de-lurking finally… I’ve been enjoying your blog, tweets, and instagram (I’m B_Schwartz09) for about 8 months now. Your words have really been an encouragement to me during my first year as a mama. :-) I recently read through your Practices of Mothering series and just loved it. I hail from Zeeland, Michigan though my husband and I dream of someday moving northwest to Oregon or Canada. :-) I blog (somewhat sporadically, I must admit) at .

    • Sarah Bessey

So glad to see you here, Becca! Recognized your handle right away.

  • Chat

very nice publish, i definitely love this website, keep on it.

  • Jenny

Thank you so much for sharing your heart here…I have become more and more disillusioned with church as I have known it ( grew up Plymouth brethren), but have been so thrilled and encouraged to find others on the same journey. Thanks again, from Kansas!

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to know that, Jenny – and hello!

  • Lynette

Late to the party to say Happy Christmas to you from rural Ontario. I grew up in Abby/Mission. I’m mommy to 6 tinies (one is taller than me already, how does this happen?) and sometimes some more foster tinies. Thanks for sharing so much from your heart, for allowing me to ponder all these things together with you.

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to meet you, Lynette! Abby says hello. :-)

  • Christie

Much love to your team in BC from mine (currently in Saskatchewan, but generally in Ontario)! I believe I’ve already de-lurked, but just for good, Christmas measure, ’tis

And lady, I am one hundred percent in (flannel) turkey pants and loving it. This is a GOOD season, isn’t it?

    • Sarah Bessey

It is a good season! Yay for Turkey Pants! Nice to see you, Christie!

  • Rachel

Discovered you this year and have been so blessed by your words. A kindred spirit (and fellow Canadian), I’d say. I blog over at – and am giving away a copy of Richard Foster’s “Celebration of Discipline” right now as a kick off to a year-long book club journey. Blessings to you as you prepare for your book – I can’t wait!

    • Sarah Bessey

So glad to meet you, Rachel!

  • Jessica Stock

Merry Christmas Sarah from Cleveland, Ohio. Your writing is a gift, thank-you for it. I blog a little at

    • Sarah Bessey

Good to see you here, Jessica!

  • Kamille Scellick

Miss Sarah–your writing has grown so much since I first quietly began reading and I am inspired by you. Christmas was celebrated with just our family of five (as our first ever without in-laws) in Bellingham, WA. We lounged in pjs the whole day and baby Caprice caught up on lost sleep from being at granny & grandpa’s house. Warm blessings on your family!

    • Sarah Bessey

Glad to know you, Kamille – someday, hopefully this year!, we’ll get together for a coffee, eh?

  • Kimberly

i am Kimberly, from south Louisiana….i so appreciate reading your blog and getting to see into your heart and your sweet family…your “tough love” quote started my 2012 year and it still challenges me here at the end. i didn’t respond to your “Jesus Feminist” request….but my story is interesting. i am part of a pretty (very!!) conservative background (Holiness/Wesleyan in flavor) that despite all it’s conservatism is way more open to women in leadership than most. (growing up, i never realized women cold not be preachers or on boards, etc. in many churches!) My church is without a pastor at this time and (strangely) i am the person often in a leadership role, up front and behind the scene. It’s so odd how this all falls out differently for each of us….and i appreciate reading your perspective. Blessings to you and yours (and so excited for your book!)

    • Sarah Bessey

So glad to meet you, Kimberly!

  • stephsday

Reading from here in Southern Arizona (as always). Love your writing. Love your heart for people. Love your commitment to Christ.

In sum? I’m a fan of Team Bessey. :)

    • Sarah Bessey

And I’m a fan of Team Metropolitan Mama!

  • Kim

Hi Sarah, I’m Kim and I’ve been “lurking” just down the road from you in Langley, B.C! I am a married and a mom to four grown kids and recently found out that I will become a grandma in the summer of 2013, if all goes well.I have been enjoying your blog for several months. I giggle a little at the things I find we have in common, like the tendency to cry when asked to speak about any thing close to the heart. I loved the Top 10 books series – we have many of those in common as well- and I have found encouragement in the fact that you and your husband have made it through some spiritual differences with both your faith and your marriage intact. I hope you and yours are blessed greatly in the coming year!

    • Sarah Bessey

Nice to meet you, Kim! So glad to have “neighbour” readers, too.

  • Louise

I’m de-lurking…I’m 23, English but live and work in Paris. I read your posts on my lunch break but the software isn’t new enough to allow the comment function to work! But I do enjoy reading everything you write.

    • Sarah Bessey

So glad to meet you, Louise! And Paris…whew! *swoon*

  • Carole F

Hello dear Sarah. I lurk a lot, and comment occasionally. This is me. I seem to be a year behind you with the one word thing! 😀 Do let me know what I’ll be working on next year, won’t you? Ta ever so.
Carole x ps watching Downton whilst typing this!

    • Sarah Bessey

Can you believe the Downton Christmas special?! Bah, humbug. And hello, Carole!

  • Marnie Johansson

A little late to the party but I’m so very close… Seattle!

    • Sarah Bessey

      Another Seattle! Hi, Marnie!

  • Natasha

Happy New Year – I’m a bit late to the party – I was off Twitter for all of Christmas week. I’ve been reading your blog for a few months and enjoying it a lot. I’m a Canadian transplanted to Seattle and love the Canadian/American tidbits you share here and there. I blog at

      Hi, Natasha!

American expat in Kiev, Ukraine. Happy Christmas! thanks for your blog :)

    Thanks you admin

  • Laura B.

Hi, I’m Laura and I’m a lurker from South Carolina in the U.S.. I think I fell in love with your blog through the 10 books’ lists. [I read the Blue Castle in the last month and LOVED it.] Books are dear friends and even though I’m 38, I want to be a librarian when I grow up:) I straddle between mainline denominations and evangelical churches, always participating in a real and usually messy relationship with Jesus. I live a pretty simple life but proudly proclaim myself a liberal democrat in one of the most Southern and conservative American states. Even though I have not had the blessing of being a wife and probably will not have the gift of being a mom (both of which deeply sadden me), I appreciate your mother’s heart and great sacrifical love for your tinies and I seek to delight in my three nephews as you delight in the children in your life. Thanks for sharing your life and words, even with complete strangers who lurk.

  • Tiffany Taylor

Hi from Barbados! Keep sharing bravely, humbly and honestly. It’s a great inspiration!

  • cait mac pen

Hi my name is Cait and I live in Hamilton Ontario. I am in my 3rd of 4 years of midwifery school and in my (gulp, 8th year of university). Your blog is without a doubt my best blog find of 2012. Thank you for being real and vulnerable and truly, a conduit for God’s light and love. I received a donation for a 50 km ride for refuge bike ride that I did too late so I donated the money to the school in Haiti and it’s brought me so much joy to be a teeny tiny part of it. I can’t wait to pre-order your book!! Wishing you lots of love and light for 2013!

  • Amanda

I’m a bit late coming to this post, but family and church took precedence over Christmas and my chronic illness limited computer time over the past week. I’m Amanda, homeschooling mom to five amazing kids, wife to my extraordinary husband, and caretaker of any number of other children. We live in CT. I have a blog, Rannygahoots : which is about living with faith, with a debilitating chronic illness, and with a house full of rannygahoots. Blessed Christmas to all!

  • Erin

I’m Erin, and I read as frequently as I can. Love your words, your heart. You can find me at for work and for words, but I’ve been slow to blog of late on the personal side of things. Thank you for sharing!

  • Allison

I am back in my home state of North Carolina after living in Haiti for five years (been back for a year and a half, though it feels like less). Love your posts! Your honesty about your faith journey has been been such an encouragement to me while I have “struggled” through my own. Happy 2013!

  • Allison

Never commented until now. Your writing brings me to tears so very often. Thanks for sharing your gift. I live in NC with my husband and pup!

  • Cat

Oh yes, this is uber late. But I wanted to say hi, to de-lurk. To wish you all good things, as you constantly give to us who you do not see or hear. I live in Melbourne, Australia with my lovely husband and three little girls (it was 106F here yesterday – that is how far away from you I am!!). You have inspired me beyond words. Your blog posts are the last ones I choose to read each day, yours are the words I want left bubbling and shimmering throughout the day.
Thank you for choosing to give of yourself and your great gift – I am grateful to have ‘found’ you! Cat
